Hey Rooted Ones,

Let’s talk about drinks without the hangover.

In the holistic world, there’s something special about sipping on a drink that not only tastes amazing but also gives your body something real. And if you’ve ever played around with mocktails, you know that flavor depth can sometimes fall flat without alcohol.

That’s where oxymels come in.

Sweet, tangy, herb-infused, and loaded with benefits oxymels have been used for centuries as tonics for digestion, immune support, and everyday wellness.
Today, we’re putting a rich, aromatic spin on a classic with this Rosemary Balsamic Oxymel and pairing it with a delicious mocktail recipe (plus an optional twist for your gin-loving friends).

🍇 Why Balsamic Vinegar?

You probably think of balsamic for salads. Fair. But traditionally, balsamic vinegar was actually a digestive tonic a soothing “balsam” taken after meals to help the body reset and process food.

Real balsamic is deep, syrupy, and packed with layers of flavor thanks to its fermentation and aging process.
Made from pressed whole grapes (juice, seeds, skins, and stems), the mixture is cooked down, fermented, and aged in wooden barrels.
The longer it’s aged, the richer and sweeter it becomes more like a fine wine or port than your average vinegar.

The one we used here is aged for six years and comes from grapes grown in the Modena region of Italy. Think: slightly sweet, slightly tart, full-bodied flavor that pairs beautifully with herbs like rosemary.

🧪 Rosemary Balsamic Oxymel (Small Batch Recipe)

This is a simple herbal kitchen project that turns out big flavor. Perfect for sipping straight, mixing into drinks, or even drizzling over roasted veggies.

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz. organic balsamic vinegar

  • 4 oz. organic cane sugar

  • 3 Tbsp. dried organic rosemary (or 4 Tbsp. chopped fresh rosemary)

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a gentle boil.

  2. Lower heat and simmer until the liquid reduces into a thick syrup.

  3. Remove from heat once it clings to the back of a spoon and drips slowly.

  4. Strain, bottle, and label your creation.

🫙 Store in a cool, dark place. Will keep for up to 6 months.

💡 Oxymel Tips:

  • Don’t over-reduce or you’ll end up with candy (still tasty, but not pourable).

  • You can swap in honey, maple syrup, or agave but it’ll change the flavor and texture.

  • Want it thicker for dramatic drink drizzles? Simmer a little longer.

  • Too sharp? Add a touch more sugar to round it out.

🥂 Rosemary-Balsamic Herbal Mocktail

This is one of those drinks that makes you feel like you’re at a fancy cocktail bar—but your liver is high-fiving you the whole time.

Ingredients (Serves 1):

  • Ice

  • 4 oz. tonic water

  • 2 oz. cooled lemon verbena tea (or any light citrus-mint blend)

  • 1 Tbsp. fresh-squeezed orange juice

  • 1–2 Tbsp. rosemary-balsamic oxymel

  • Fresh rosemary sprig for garnish

Directions:

  1. Fill a glass with ice.

  2. Add tonic, tea, and orange juice.

  3. Stir gently.

  4. Drizzle in your oxymel and let it swirl like magic.

  5. Garnish with a rosemary sprig. Sip slowly and feel fancy.

🔥 Make It Your Way:

🫖 Cozy Winter Version:

  • Ditch the ice and swap tonic for a warm orange peel infusion.

  • Keep the lemon verbena tea hot.

  • Add oxymel to taste for a warming digestive blend.

🍸 Want the cocktail version?

  • Add 1 oz. gin in place of 1 oz. of the tea or just add it to the recipe above.

  • Stir gently and serve over ice. It’s herbal, refreshing, and incredibly smooth.

Why This Matters

Every herbal creation is more than just a recipe it’s a way to bring nature into your body, your day, and your rituals.
This oxymel is delicious, sure. But it’s also functional. The rosemary supports memory, digestion, and circulation. The vinegar helps balance blood sugar and gut function. And the ritual of making it yourself? That’s medicine too.
